Why I Love This Photo - No.3

Last week's image was taken just before the Christmas and New Year period, when the whole of Meribel and The Three Valleys were empty of visitors. So does this mean that as soon as the Festive period starts the ski areas get packed out?

Not necessarily, as this photo shows. Granted there are many popular pistes that will always attract the crowds, that's the same in all ski resorts. However if you know where to go, you can in fact have a lovely tranquil experience. This particular morning I had been skiing with Gilly and John, we had been off-piste in the gorgeous powder snow on a variant of the Lac du Lou itinerarie. Most people who ski this route tend to start at the top of La Masse in Les Menuires, but we decided to start from a completely different point of Cime de Caron above Val Thorens. It is quite an amazing run, that takes you a long way from the pistes, and at the end joins up with the bottom of the more popular La Masse route. This was where this picture was taken. I was stood on the edge of the frozen lac (du Lou) looking towards the wooden foot bridge.

The reason why I like this image is because it reminds me of that fantastic ski with Gilly and John plus it's a great record of how wonderful the weather and snow was that day. Also, as a photographer, I'm a bit of a sucker when it comes to reflections and I think it works well here. Fingers crossed we will get many more days like this in just a couple of months time.
